Having a committed 3-5 members is the first magical portion, second is having a Kangaroo Courts backyard basketball court. And lastly is a set of simple drills that will embed the fundamentals of a successful game into your muscle memory.
When training for a serious game it’s best if you have your own court, so you are able to play when you desire, remove the hassle of commuting and many more reasons which will be discussed in our next blog. Now moving into the drills !!
3 Fundamental Backyard Court Drills
The Pass & Shoot
As simple as it may sound it is a very easy principle to be overlooked. Having a perfect pass is one thing but having the perfect follow up shot is what seals the deal.
Arrange your team with one member at a selected position on the court, another at a point of passing and another under the basket to rebound the ball, this is a fast moving effective set-up, if you want to level up add an obstacle such as a chair to simulate a defender.
Once everything is in place set up a timer and attempt to make a set amount of shots within the time limit. Start with a goal of 20 attempted shots in 1 Min, this will create a fast environment for the shooter, the passer and the rebounder. To add some spice add a penalty of 10 pushups to every mess up a player has.
1 Defense 2 Offence
This drill will put significant pressure on defense and inculcate real game situations, as much as we love to have our team on defense, in most cases whether it's 3x3 or 5x5 during a fast-break there is one man under the basket and two attacking.
To ensure that your team is prepared for this, bring about this scenario where one player is near the free throw and the other two advance from beyond the 3 point line. While this may result in the offensive succeeding most of the time it trains the defensive player to be more alert, more bouncy and effective with their movements.
Screen & Roll
This drill will involve two players on offense, 1 player on defense and an obstacle such as a chair. Start off by having a 1-1 scenario and during the offense the supporting player performs a screen for his team-mate and then rolls to an attack path towards the basket. At this point the teammate with the ball has passed the defender and has the opportunity to pass.
This is where the obstacle comes into play, have the chair or stool placed in-between the path of passing to simulate real life situations. You may hit the stool a few times but don’t get disappointed, keep trying until you succeed. Instill a reward and punishment scheme as a fun element to the drill as well.
Hours & Effort
While these drills are effective for any team, it will only benefit the teams that constantly practice the concepts frequently. Have a schedule according to you and your peers convenience, have it more than just a training session, include it in your spend a day plans, your weekend plans or whatever works for you. Constant practice is what hones your skills to the next level.
The Kangaroo Courts Magic
As you can see these are one of the many benefits of having a Kangaroo Courts backyard court. Convenience, flexibility and accessibility!
